With good snow, the Nordic Trail is a gem for cross-country skiers. The trail is less than an hour's drive from Milwaukee, in the Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. On Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021, the Nordic Ski Club of Milwaukee will cross-country ski on our namesake trail. It was originally designed in the 1970s by David Harrison, an early president of the Nordic Ski Club. This scenic trail system has options for beginners to expert skiers. Meet us at 1 p.m. (ski at 1:15 p.m.) next to the shelter at the Nordic Trail. The shelter will not be open, but restrooms will be. If it's really cold, stay in your cars till we have a group.
Take I-43 south from Milwaukee to HWY 20 (East Troy) west till it ends Then take a jog left (west) onto Hwy 12. Go to County Rd. H and turn right (north). The Nordic Trail is a few miles up the road on the right (east). You can print a trail map by clicking on this link.
If there’s too little snow there, we may ski at Lapham Peak State Park, which makes snow. Look for an update email a day or two before. But definitely call Paula Brookmire at (414) 527-0040 Saturday evening or between 9 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday to confirm the ski location and let her know you’re coming. By meeting up before everyone starts skiing, you may be able to find a ski partner. If there’s no snow, we may hike along Menomonee River Pkwy.
The Nordic Ski Club of Milwaukee (NSCM) continues to practice social distancing and the use of face masks, as recommended by the CDC and Wisconsin authorities. Know that your participation in any event is at your own risk. Before attending any NSCM outing or event, please check with the event leader. Use good judgment and continue to keep us all safe.
